The Salvation Army is against mandatory drug detox and rehabilitation policies

3 March 2003

The Salvation Army believes that detox and rehabilitation diversion policies should be offered as a choice to people with a drug habit when they appear before the courts.

The success of such policies has been proven, but if people are forced to attend drug rehabilitation centres there is a very real risk that as soon as they can, they will revert to their old habits and be subject to the immediate risk of taking an overdose.

Some addicts could perceive detox and rehabilitation services as an arm of the penal system if they are forced to attend, and would never again voluntarily admit themselves for treatment.
