The beginning of the year has seen some new and some not-so-new faces playing with the MSB.
Whilst Ron Heathcote takes a six month “sabbatical” due to additional work responsibilities, Band Reservist Warren Hutchinson has come out of retirement to hold down the 2nd trombone position.
Sitting next to him on 1st Trombone is Stuart Lees, who returns to the MSB after a few years break. Stuart replaces Lt David Collinson, who filled in on 1st trombone for 6 months at the end of 2009.
Jason Stewart is taking a slightly shorter break than Ron and should be back with the band very soon. Taking over the Soprano Cornet chair is Dean Rusling, another former MSB member. Although it was sad to say goodbye to Ben Anderson at the end of 2009, the MSB greatly admires the reasons why he left. Ben plans to enter The Salvation Army Training College in 2011 and, having just recently married, decided he need to devote more time to other areas.
Bolstering the back row cornet section are new comers Stephen Webb (1st Cornet) and Daryl McMillin (2nd Cornet).
Meanwhile, the Baritone section has welcomed Wayne Collyer (2nd Baritone), who recently moved down to Melbourne from Wollongong. Wayne is known to most of the MSB members having attended the past 3 Future Brass events.
The Tuba section are really pleased that Rob Stevens is back again after his battle with ill health, and are also pleased that Band Reservist Laurie Griffin will remain “on call” for another 6 months.
Major Robert Paterson has relinquished the role of Band Executive Officer, due to his pending retirement. We have certainly enjoyed his ministerial leadership.
Taking over from Major Paterson is Lt. Colonel Ian Hamilton. Ian knows the band well, (particularly the Eupho section) and has quickly settled into his new role.
We welcome the appointment to the MSB of Major Gary Hart, as Assistant Executive Officer – Administration. Gary will be providing much needed administration support to the band.
Tim Cochrane has been appointed to the MSB as Quartermaster. We look forward to Tim making a valuable contribution to the MSB’s ministry in this important role.

The Bandmaster has spent many hours at the whiteboard during the break coming up with a few instrumental changes for the new MSB season.
Neil Roper hands back the Soprano Cornet to Jason Stewart and Neil takes over as Assistant Principal Cornet to Garry Todd. Brett Holman moves from 2nd Cornet to the Horn Section and Graeme Faragher now occupies the bass trombone seat.
We welcome back Major Robert Paterson who has been appointed as the Band's Executive Officer. (close)

Wed 10 Sep 2008
The band was pleased to welcome Maestro Bram Tovey to rehearsal. Bram was in Melbourne to conduct the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in a series of concerts.
It was good to renew our associated with Bram, having first met him in Winnipeg during the band’s 1991 Canadian Tour, where Bram was the compere for the evening concert. On that occasion Bram conducted the band in a memorable performance of The Pines of Rome.
Bram worked the band through Robert Redhead’s Reflections in Nature and Leslie Condon’s march Celebration. This was an extremely rewarding musical experience with Bram providing some excellent training and deep insight to the music.
Our time with Bram came to an end too quickly and he concluded the rehearsal with the hymn tunes Penlan and Crimond. We do hope his professional engagements will bring him ‘down under’ again and provide a further opportunity for Bram to work with the band. (close)
